Most of my students ask me what are the best places to visit during their free time in Chandigarh. Many of them come from different parts of the country and are new and unknown to the city.
If you don’t know what are some good places to start exploring the Chandigarh, you may end up spending a lot of money and time on commuting to not so suitable places.
The attractions of the city are many and you may probably not visit all of them during your course stint in Chandigarh. Here are 7 best places that I believe are worth a visit:
1. Do Some Window Shopping at Sector 17 Market
If you are into fashion, you will find most clothing and footwear brands available in the market of sector 17 Chandigarh. All the latest fashion, trendy boutiques, and awesome tailors are present in this area.
You must take note that sector 17 is a costly area and so are the stuff available here. As a student who is living in a PG, maybe you are on a budget and can’t buy the expensive wearable. That’s why I recommend you to do just window shopping here. For your actual shopping, go to the market of sector 19 or sector 22.
Other than the shopping, the market of sector 17 is also an awesome place to spend an evening as there are many tourist attractions available here.
2. Amuse Yourself for a Full Day at Rock Garden
The Rock Garden in Chandigarh is made by recycling the waste materials. You will find many beautiful figures of humans and animals that are made by sculpting discarded materials. You must visit this garden as it will change your perspective towards things that you throw in a dustbin.
What is fascinating about the garden is that it was started as a part time hobby in a spare time by Mr. Nek Chand Saini. Later, the project got traction and became one of the most creative demonstrations of art.
Here you will find narrow passages, a peaceful waterfall, multiple amphitheaters, human and animal sculptures etc. all spread over 40 acre of land.
3. Please Your Eyes at Zakir Hussain Rose Garden
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is spread over 30 acres of land and hosts almost every variety of roses along with many herbs. You will experience a cool breeze blowing around you with a mixed fragrance of roses. It’s a truly blissful experience visiting this place.
Every year, at the start of spring in February, a rose festival is celebrated in this garden. Tourists from all over the country come to visit this phenomena. Rose festival is perhaps the best time to visit this garden but you will find it a great place to spend an evening any time around the year.
If you don’t mind shelling out some extra money, you may also take a helicopter tour all over the rose garden. It is available for everyone.
4. Take a Relaxing Walk Along Sukhna Lake
Sukhna lake in Chandigarh is a perfect spot to take a nice relaxing stroll. The environment all around is so peaceful that it calms your senses immediately. This experience is only enhanced by the cool breeze coming your way from the lake.
Sukhna lake is also famous for boating facility available here. You must be in a group of at least two people to hire a boat. The more friends the better as you may get a bargain.
Many people also come here to do a quick workout in the morning. The peace of the environment, freshness of the air, and magnificent scene of the sun rising in the morning makes it a perfect place to do some exercise.
5. Know The City At Le Corbusier Centre
You may probably know that Chandigarh was planned by a French architect Le Corbusier. He was born in Switzerland but later moved to France and adopted a citizenship there.
If you want to know the Chandigarh city, its history, the story behind it, and the key happenings throughout its lifespan, you must visit this centre. You will be amazed to see how much the city has evolved since its origin.
Most of the information is displayed in the picture form, not text. That makes it even more educating and fun experience to visit Le Corbusier Centre. It is located in sector 19 B, on Madhya Marg, Chandigarh.
6. Satisfy Your Movie Buff at Piccadilly Cinema
Piccadilly cinema is located at Piccadily Mall, sector 34, Chandigarh. It is one of the best cinemas available in the city and I recommend if you want to watch a movie, check this one first.
The Piccadilly cinema has 3 screens and you will often find all latest Hindi, Punjabi, and Hollywood movies are shown here. The digital dolby system, 3d facility, comfortable seats, and reasonable ticket prices all make it a perfect movie spot for students.
One added tip here is, even if you must consider watching your next movie at Piccadilly cinema, prefer to buy tickets online through bookmyshow app. You may get some added discount or a cashback through the app.
7. Don’t Miss The Sector 8-9-10-11 Gerhi Route
Gerhi route is not a particular place but a set of streets where students ride a motorbike or drive a car just for fun. The entire route is full of youngsters and you also wouldn’t want to miss this experience. Gerhi route is also known as Azadi route.
The entire Gerhi route consists areas of sector 8, 9, 10, and 11. There are many colleges on the way. The more you drive here the more you will like it.
The gathering of youth, the availability of street food, and the magnificent surroundings make it feel like a heaven on earth. Must make some time for Gehri route.
So that’s pretty much all you need to know about how to utilize your free time exploring the city. I recommend you visit them during the day or in the evening and avoid staying out for late nights. Thanks.
